Library
Our school library is a busy, lively and well used facility. It contains an extensive stock of reading books, reference books and newspapers. There are over 3,000 books for loan and the substantial reference section includes books to support all areas of the curriculum including books in other languages.
A member of staff is on duty during every Main School morning break supported by a team of volunteer librarians from Year 6.
Library sessions are part of the curriculum for all pupils from Year 2 to Year 6 and pupils learn how the library is organised, and how to use it efficiently. Older pupils practice study and research skills and are introduced to a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books, reference books and poetry. A folder of Recommended reading books for each year group is kept up to date and on display in the library. Pupils are also able to request books they would like added to the library.
A section has recently been created specifically to appeal to early/emerging readers and this has proved very popular with our younger readers.
The library is comfortably furnished with soft chairs and sofas for relaxed, quiet reading as well as a seating area for group work.
All pupils are encouraged to use the library on a regular basis and to have a reading book at all times.
‘Reading is the gateway skill that makes all other learning possible.’
